Responding to experiences that the NPCC has despatched a letter to police chiefs asking them to contemplate “pausing” “non-priority arrests”, the Home Abuse Commissioner, Nicole Jacobs, says: “Stories that police chiefs are being requested by the Nationwide Police Chiefs Council to contemplate arresting fewer persons are sobering. As violence in opposition to girls and ladies is now thought of one in all key nationwide threats by the police – on a par with terrorism – I name on authorities and policing leaders to urgently make clear that this steering shouldn’t apply to home abuse and sexual violence.
“The overwhelming majority of home abuse instances are closed with no additional motion and the police typically fail to arrest harmful perpetrators. If police are put ready the place they need to query the capability of the system prior to each arrest, it should solely result in additional failings.
“I’m extremely involved for victims’ security. It’s a shame that the jail overcrowding disaster has been allowed to escalate such that victims at the moment are paying the value. These emergency measures have gone from dangerous to worse. I’m urging the Dwelling Secretary and Justice Secretary to return to a long run answer that places victims’ security first.”
